WHERE IS THE TOP TALENT?

This is the question I’m asked more than any other as I speak at conferences both here and abroad. Recruiters are frustrated because it has become so difficult to find the talent their clients want to hire. My response is always the same - “this is a great market for recruiters.” If it was EASY to find candidates, you would not have so many job orders to work! You just have to improve your process of obtaining referrals, you have to make recruiting presentations EVERY SINGLE DAY and you need to identify creative ways of surfacing Top Talent. Too many recruiters are working the SAME database and depending on Job Boards. (It’s interesting to note that the majority of individuals who utilize the job boards are other recruiters - so the competition for these candidates is extreme.)
You need to become a MAGNET for top talent. Top Talent is EVERYWHERE, they attend baseball games, school functions, sporting events, you just need to always be looking and networking. When you make Recruiting Presentations have a blind list printed up of ALL the opportunities in your office that you can email to the home email address of every candidate. Your candidates will email the list to others and this lateral marketing can boost your candidate flow tremendously. In this market it is the Recruiter with the candidate that WINS. You also need to get your candidates out of more than just ONE opportunity. Market their skills so their choices are all companies you represent. Try to write job orders that are similar so you can multi-use your candidates and orders.
The next time you hear yourself say “It’s really hard to find Top Talent!”, put a smile on your face and realize all the money you can earn in this tremendous market for our Profession. You write your own paycheck in Recruiting and if you become a Magnet for Talent - you will become very pleased with your W-2 for 2007!
