This past week-end I had my entire family over for dinner twice. It was interesting to observe the TV habits of my family. When some of my grandchildren decided to compete at Play Station, the sports fans instantly proceeded to our family room to watch sports. Other family members were discussing how many times they watched some of their favorite movies. I realized my brother and I weren’t involved in the conversation because neither of us watch much TV. My brother John and I started to discuss the difference between the shows we watched as children and the ones on TV today. John also informed me that the average sitcom has almost 18 minutes of commercials, almost 1/3 of the time you watch TV - you are watching commercials!

This brings me to my topic today. When you are a recruiter you must commit to be a lifetime learner. The markets change, candidate and client demands change, the economy changes and you need to stay informed. When is the last time you read a book on sales, closing, negotiating or overcoming objections? It is not the responsibility of your owners or managers to provide this type of training - it is your responsbility as a SALES PROFESSIONAL. Yes, recruiting is SALES!

If you listed to training tapes, CD, MP3 files or read training materials during “commercials” just think of how much better you would become at our profession. I’d also like to talk to those of you who are “news junkies” or “newspaper junkies!” How much of what you’re reading is positive? How much of what you hear is going to help you in your career? If you just commited to one hour of training daily - when you would normally watch TV, you would have the benefit of fifteen 24-hour days of training. What do you think would elevate your level of performance? Watching TV, listening or reading news or dedicating one hour a day to enhance your skills. I think the answer to this question is very obvious!

Invest in yourself throughout your career and you will become one of the top producers in our profession that the majority of recruiters envy!
