Have you ever lost a placement before either your candidate or your client said one word?
First impressions are everything in the recruiting profession! It is such a vital part of the process and once it is made, it can’t be taken back!
Do any of the following hit too close to home for you? They do for our office.
“Her skirt was so short we saw the color of her underwear”
“He said that he dyed his hair green for luck on his interview”
“She could not bring herself to go to the interview because her pet rat died last night”
“She felt her nose ring matched her outfit and would show who she really is as an individual”
“I brought my 2 children to my interview because you said that I was interviewing for a family friendly company, I knew they would behave in the lobby.”
“Her blouse was so open that I had to ask her to close it before the President of our company saw her and died of shock”
“I wore my gym shoes because I had to walk to my interview”
“My boyfriend came with me for support”
“I didn’t cover my tattoo because I am really proud of it”…it was a snake!
“I wore my baseball hat because you said he loved the Cubs”
These may sound ridiculous but I promise you that these are all real life scenarios that we have SUFFERED through with our candidates and our clients! Never underestimate what they might do regardless of the level of individual you represent. I can remember sending a VP of HR on an interview in Dallas, TX and he decided to wear his “lucky red boots” to meet the President of a Fortune 500 company - who was not impressed. I’m from the Midwest - telling someone not to wear cowboy boots to an interview was not part of my PREP!
Please don’t forget to STATE THE OBVIOUS when preparing your candidates for their interviews. It can make or break your PLACEMENT!
Here’s to a thorough PREP and always covering what a person will WEAR to the interview!
